Uncomfortable Beginnings
In 2019 I attended a 10 day Vipassana meditation retreat in country Victoria. I was a few sessions in and while I had some good sits, I wasn't quite there yet and was struggling to get comfortable in my body.
My meditation cushion wasn’t designed for comfort.
Then I remembered what I did to get through my last Vipassana. It wasn't perfect but it worked; I sat on the front edge of the cushion so my hips were slightly tilted forward and I had support behind my bum. I also arranged extra pillows under each knee to reduce the pressure on my bum and support my legs. It worked, I was finally comfortable and could just sit and settle my mind.
But I couldn't stop thinking “why was that such a drama?” Why doesn't someone make a cushion in this shape?
Then after a few moments I decided, "I'm an engineer, I can do this, I'm going to make the ultimate meditation cushion".
It's taken a lot longer than I imagined, but with help from body specialists, fabric experts and too many prototypes to count, SitCush was born.
Do no harm
We believe that you get what you give in life and in business.
Our vision is to create the best products possible while maintaining a strong ethos of Right Livelihood and doing no harm. We aim to support people to live happier and more connected lives through SitCush products and courses that will make it easier for them to develop and maintain a consistent meditation practice and move their bodies everyday.
Our vision of Right Livelihood also encompasses the planet that we live on and all the people that are involved in our business both near and far. We all have the power to vote with our wallets; if you support SitCush, you are supporting an environmentally conscious, fair trade and ethical world.
Be the change
I'm Roland, the Founder of SitCush.
I have had a meditation practice for more than 20 years and am committed to helping others feel comfortable and supported while they sit, settle their minds and meditate.
I have a diverse background including my work as a research engineer at Mercedes Benz and Ferrari in Europe, helping to design aeroplane parts at Boeing and trading on international financial markets. My life shifted when I discovered yoga and began a daily Ashtanga practice before completing Yoga teacher training with Nicky Knoff.
Gandhi’s words, "Be the change that you wish to see in the world" remind me that every day in every action we are literally creating the world we live in. Be that in how we treat people we encounter, how we respond to difficulty, what we create or buy and what we say.
This is the ethos that I bring to SitCush, my classroom as a highschool teacher, and was part of the reason I left the corporate engineering world.
